Fort Fairfield – Mary M. Oakes, 86, wife of the late Rene J. Oakes, passed away Wednesday evening February 14, 2018 at a Caribou healthcare facility, following a brief illness. She was born May 3, 1931 in St. Francis, the daughter of Willie and Fabianne Thibodeau.

She attended school in St. Francis and was married to Rene J. Oakes on November 11, 1947. She became a resident of Fort Fairfield in the mid 1950’s where she was a communicant of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church. Mary had been employed by Converse Shoe, Presque Isle, Valshing Enterprises, Easton and Interstate Foods, Fort Fairfield. Mary loved to play the guitar and sing, and was a member of a band while residing in St. Francis.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Oakes was predeceased by her husband Rene on November 20, 2001; one son-in-law, Niles Jandreau; four brothers, Reginald, Addis, Eldrick and Valerick Thibodeau; three sisters, Lorraine Watkins, Maureen Brown and Rose Davenport. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Sandra Oakes of Fort Fairfield; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane Jandreau of Old Orchard Beach, Brenda and Gary Fitzsimmons of Limestone, Sandra and David Saucier of Van Buren; a special nephew whom Mary and Rene raised as their own, Lyman Thibodeau and his wife Karen of South Berwick; three brothers, Donald Thibodeau of Washburn, Albert Thibodeau and his wife Shirley of Myrtle Beach, SC, Carl Thibodeau and his wife Joyce of New Hampshire; three sisters, Theresa Jandreau of Patterson, NY, Irena Greenier, Joan Beaulieu and her husband Richard, all of Fort Fairfield. She also leaves behind two sister-in-laws, Yvonne Thibodeau of St. Francis and Feril Thibodeau of Southington, CT; as well as eleven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Sunday February 18, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday February 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield with Fr. David Raymond celebrant. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held after the Mass at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Council Number 1753, 260 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Interment will take place later in the spring at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mary to C-A-N-C-E-R, P.O.
