February 19, 1945 - April 26, 2020

Cheryl D. Reed, 75, of Alexandria, Virginia passed away on Sunday, April 26th, 2020, at her home. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, on February 19, 1945, she was the daughter of the late governor of Maine, John H. Reed and his wife Cora Davidson Reed.

She attended Fort Fairfield elementary and grammar schools until 9th grade when she transferred and graduated from Oak Grove School for Girls in Vassalboro, Maine in 1963. She went on to graduate from Colby College in Waterville, Maine with a degree in liberal arts. After a year teaching in Kennebunk, Maine, she decided to attend the one year Katherine Gibbs legal secretary program. With her certification in hand she he moved to the Washington D.C. area where she worked as a legal secretary, primarily at Pillsbury Law, for many years until her retirement in 2013. It was in the first year of moving to Alexandria, Virginia that she met her beloved partner and husband, Colonel John Lee. They were together for over 40 years. They loved to travel and had many wonderful European cruises. They also loved spending summers at the family camp on North Pond in Smithfield, Maine. Both adored cats and had many rescues in their home, who were treated like royalty. Cheryl loved shopping and was very generous with gifts for her family. She was a long time member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Southwest Washington D.C. and had many dear friends from this fellowship. Cheryl was a kind and generous person and helped many in need.

Cheryl will be deeply missed by her beloved sister, Rudy and brother in law, Jerry Duford of Groveland, MA; Her nephew Reed Duford of Groveland, MA; Her nephew Curt Duford and his wife Lindsay of Burlington, VT; Her niece, Drew Duford Dupre and her husband Rich Dupre of Newton, NH; And Grandnephews Henry and Wes. She also leaves behind many cousins and friends.

A memorial graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Fort Fairfield, Maine, June 3, 2022 at 2 pm. Memorial contributions can be made to an animal rescue or shelter of your choice.
