WILLIAM G. A. BURGESS III
FORT FAIRFIELD

Fort Fairfield - William G. A. Burgess III was born in Bangor, Maine on November 18, 1948 to Charles and B. Valre Burgess. Bill died peacefully at home on May 30, 2022.

Bill grew up in Millinocket and attended college at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. He was drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country for two tours during the Vietnam War. When Bill returned he began a career focused on children and family services. He worked for the State of Maine and private agencies where he was well known for giving voice to underserved populations at legislative hearings. Bill advocated for social and mental health services for people those resources did not often reach. He built steadfast relationships with clients and developed community services for children most at risk. Bill was a caring leader that brought intensity and directness in order to provide services that were often disregarded or overlooked. Bill was an avid outdoorsman; he was comfortable in nature and was well versed in navigating the woods of Aroostook County and Maine. He truly enjoyed fishing and excelled at it. He was a proud life member of the NRA and as a Harley Davidson enthusiast, a member of HOGS.

He is survived by his loving wife and lifelong companion Brenda Barker, his brother Jim Burgess, lifelong friends Mike Jones, Don MacMillan, Tom Sawyer and their families, and a special friend Rod Bouchey. His sisters-in-law Laura Smith and her son Matthew and daughter Sarah, Sharon Barker and John Hoyt and their children Adam and Matthew. He had deep affection for his nieces Andrea, Jeremie, and Hannah and their families and a close relationship with his great nephew Clay. He loved his family and his dog Charlie.

At Bill’s request there will be a private graveside service with Military Honors at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery. Contributions to honor Bill’s memory can be made to the Central Aroostook Humane Society, 24 Cross St., Presque Isle, ME 04769.
