South Portland & Fort Fairfield – Avis I. DeMerchant, 90, passed away unexpectedly December 25, 2022 at her South Portland home. She was born November 30, 1932 in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Oscar and Iva (Wortman) DeMerchant.

Avis was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1951 and was a member of the Fort Fairfield Bethel Baptist Church. Prior to her retirement, Avis had been employed by Yusef’s Restaurant, Caribou as a cashier. Avis had been a resident of the Betsy Ross House in South Portland where she formed several dear and lasting relationships, and enjoyed playing poker and left, right and center with her fellow residents.

In addition to her parents, Avis was predeceased by two brothers, Winston and Donald DeMerchant; four sisters, Geraldine Boulier, Pearl Burns, Beryl Hill and Shirley Bodecker. She is survived by one brother, Derald DeMerchant of Terryville, CT; as well as several nieces and nephews, including Larry DeMerchant and his wife Laura of South Portland, and Joyce Fuller and her husband Mark of Texas.

A private graveside service will take place in the spring at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield.
