Obituary for Maxine E. Higgins (Shaw)

Maxine E. Higgins (Shaw)
MAXINE E. (SHAW) HIGGINS
FORT FAIRFIELD

Maxine E. (Shaw) Higgins, 76, wife of the late Vaughn A. Higgins Sr., passed away Monday morning February 20, 2023 at a Caribou nursing home, following an extended illness. She was born in Caribou on October 27, 1946, the daughter of Ralph and Thelma (Lovely) Shaw, but was a life long resident of Fort Fairfield.

She was a wonderful cook and made the most amazing homemade bread. Being an avid gardener, she would be found canning or pickling every fall beside her late husband Vaughn. Making jams/jellies was a yearly summer activity, as well as foraging for mushrooms. She was a true Aroostook County Homemaker. She became a resident of Caribou Nursing & Rehab in 2012 after suffering a stroke, leaving her paralyzed on her left side. She made the best of it though participating in many activities and making friends with all whom she met.

In addition to her parents, Maxine was predeceased by her husband, Vaughn, and two sons, Jeffrey & Matthew Higgins; three brothers, Arnold, Eugene and Royal Shaw; one sister, Susan Achorn. She is survived by her daughter, Deb and son-in-law Bill of New Hampshire; stepson, Vaughn Jr. and his wife Donna; stepdaughter, Doria and her husband Gary, all of Gorham; grandchildren, Breton, Julia, Mark, Evie, Russ, Nate and Sarah; one sister, Florence Preble of Springfield; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held later in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Higgins to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, 51 US Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, Maine 04074. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gibersondorseyfuneralhome.com .
