Fort Fairfield – Ivan L. Shapiro MD, husband of the late Joan I. (Lockhart) Shapiro RN, passed away Saturday evening, March 5, 2022 at Mercy Home, Eagle Lake, following a period of declining health. He was born November 14, 1940 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of William and Vivian (Chffax) Shapiro.

Ivan was a graduate of the Cincinnati school system and Ohio University earning his doctorate degree in medicine. He was a veteran of the United States Army earning the rank of Major serving as a medical surgeon. Ivan served his medical residency at the Cook County Hospital, Chicago and owned and operated Batavia Medical Associates in Batavia, IL for many years. After moving to Maine he was a surgeon for the Cary Medical Center, Caribou and retired from The Aroostook Medical Center, Presque. Ivan served many years as a Maine State Medical Examiner, was a member of the National Rifle Association, was a gun broker and dealer, and taught handgun safety course. He was the president for many years of the Amateur Radio Association Ham Club, call sign WK1W and enjoyed riding his motorcycle. He possessed a special love for Jazz music and enjoyed recording and playing, and was a camera buff and had a special talent of photography. Ivan was a family man and will be dearly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of fifty-three years, Joan I. Shapiro on January 1, 2022; and his son, Michael D. Shapiro on January 25, 2011. He is survived by his daughter, Audrey E. Shapiro of Fort Fairfield and her companion, Ronald Sifton of Presque Isle; two grandsons, Kyle A. McCullough and his companion Brittany Page of Presque Isle, Karter M. O’Clair of Fort Fairfield; one great grandson, Harrison D. McCullough of Presque Isle; one brother, Arthur Shapiro of Naples, FL; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Saturday, March 12, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Interment will be private at a later date.
